I’m honored to serve on the board of the Hot Spring Tourism & Welcome Center in my small western North Carolina mountain town. Every few months, I write an article around local craft, environmental sustainability efforts (as we sit on the Appalachian Trail), around one of our cherished locals who help create the spirit we share here in the river valley.

This season, I was asked to create a short list of activities for folks to consider in the winter so I compiled a few of my favorite things including some well known favorites like catching a sunset on Max Patch with the added focus on taking in all the progress made thanks to the efforts of Carolina Mountain Club and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy + biking River Road into Paint Creek to take in the stark beauty of the French Broad River as you turn into a magical nook in the Cherokee National Forest.
